The Los Angeles Police Department is investigating after a homeowner shot and killed a home invasion suspect. Officers were first called to a home in the 11400 block of Swinton Avenue in Granada Hills around 5 a.m. Saturday morning on calls of a "hot prowl," or a burglary in progress when the homeowner is present, law enforcement officials said.

"The officers' preliminary investigation determined that approximately three to four armed males in their 20s entered the home with the intent to burglarize the location," LAPD said on X, formerly Twitter, just after 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon. "A suspect pointed a weapon at the victim and while the suspects were inside the residence, the victim produced a firearm and a shooting occurred." One of the suspects was struck by gunfire and died at the scene, police said.

A man has been arrested in connection with the murders of three homeless men, and authorities believe he is also linked to another homicide in San Dimas. At a press conference on Saturday afternoon, Los Angeles Police Department Chief Michel Moore identified the suspect as Jerrid Joseph Powell, 33, of Los Angeles.

Powell is alleged to be the gunman behind the murders of three homeless men across Los Angeles from Nov. 26 to Nov. 29. It was confirmed on Saturday that he is also the prime suspect in the follow-home murder of Nicholas Simbolon of San Dimas on Tuesday night. According to Chief Moore, Powell was responsible for four murders in four days.

Residents in Larchmont Village held a meeting with law enforcement on Saturday to address a troubling increase in violent crimes across the community. The meeting was held with Los Angeles Police Department officials in attendance. Residents said they don’t feel safe anymore and are demanding a solution.

“We have for months, actually more than a year, been reporting various break-ins and forced entries as a community,” an attendee is heard saying. Officers from LAPD’s Olympic Division were onsite answering questions and addressing citizen concerns following a series of break-ins, robberies and other violent incidents over the past few months.

Israel’s war with Hamas erupted again Friday, as airstrikes hit houses and buildings in the Gaza Strip minutes after a weeklong truce expired. Health authorities in the besieged territory reported dozens of Palestinians killed and Israel dropped leaflets over Gaza City and southern parts of the enclave, urging civilians to flee to avoid the fighting.

Militants in Gaza resumed firing rockets into Israel, and fighting broke out between Israel and Hezbollah militants operating along its northern border with Lebanon.

The resumption of the war threatens to compound the suffering in Gaza. Some 2 million people -- almost its entire population -- are crammed into the territory's south, where Israel urged people to relocate at the war's start and has since vowed to extend its ground assault. Unable to go into north Gaza or neighboring Egypt, their only escape is to move around within the 85-square-mile area (220 square kilometers).
