For the second year, LAUSD’s Third Street Elementary School in Hancock Park is partnering with Making Caring Common, a program created by Harvard University that aims to foster a positive, caring culture of kindness in schools.
Designed for grades K-12 the program is about changing how kids treat each other and teaching them how to care for one another by engaging the whole community including parents, teachers and students.
This year, 50 volunteers are going into the classrooms monthly to teach lessons on kindness. The program wants to change how children treat each other, and other schools may be added to the program in years to come.

An Irvine woman ecalled the terrifying moment she caught a serial burglar hiding inside her closet. The victim, Brittney Heinzman, 35, remains terrified after the shocking encounter. She moved into the luxury Skyloft apartment complex just months ago. She left town for a week during the Thanksgiving holiday and when she returned on Dec. 1, she discovered the front door unlocked and her apartment completely ransacked.
As she investigated her home, she opened the closet door to discover the intruder inside — a woman found crouching down and clutching kitchen utensils. “She just looked at me like a deer in headlights and I just screamed, ‘Get out! get out!’” Henizman recalled of the terrifying encounter.

Video captured the moment a school crossing guard was thrown into the air after a vehicle jumped the curb and smashed into him in Lakewood. On Dec. 1, Eduardo Villalpando, 38, has just walked a group of children across the street when suddenly, a speeding driver slammed into him.
As Villalpando was standing on the corner of Centralia and Pioneer Streets, a speeding Dodge Challenger slammed into a Honda Pilot SUV that was turning left at the intersection. The violent impact sent the Challenger barrelling into the street corner, through a cement shopping sign and directly into Villalpando who was propelled into the air by the nose of the vehicle.
Villalpando’s left leg was severed and his right leg was severely injured. Although he survived the violent collision, he faces a long journey to recovery ahead.
