As the first of the eight-day celebration of Hanukkah kicks off, some in the Jewish community have expressed concern about the rise in antisemitic sentiment amid the war between Israel and Hamas, while others say the point of the Festival of Lights is to celebrate outwardly and proudly.
The ancient tradition of Hanukkah marks the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem and the miracle of a small pot of oil lasting for eight nights. The fear for some of those observing the tradition is that displaying their Jewish symbols and religious practices could make them a target.

The gunman in the shooting at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, that left three people dead and one seriously injured, was a former professor who had applied for jobs several times at Nevada universities, but was turned down every time, the Clark County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday.
The gunman, identified as Anthony Polito, was killed in a shootout with two detectives, police said Wednesday. The shooter did not appear to be targeting students, law enforcement officials said. All four people killed were faculty members. The 67-year-old man lived in a Henderson, Nevada, apartment, which police searched following the shooting. Sheriff Kevin McMahill said Polito had been struggling financially, and law enforcement found an eviction notice taped to his door when they arrived.

A Granada Hills family who was previously targeted in a “dinnertime burglary” was victimized again Tuesday night, marking the second time burglars have struck the home in less than a week.
Located in the Greyhawk Ranch community, the victim’s home was burglarized on Nov. 29 when thieves escaped with around $150,000 worth of valuables. The victim, identified only as David, was returning home from Christmas shopping with his wife and their newborn baby when he spotted the thieves leaving his home with a stockpile of stolen items.
He chased them down in his car and rammed their vehicle to prevent them from fleeing the neighborhood. The burglars eventually escaped in their damaged vehicle. However, just days later, a group of intruders, possibly the same ones who previously ransacked his home, broke into his residence once again.
