A teenager was sentenced to life in prison Friday for killing four students, wounding more and terrorizing Michigan’s Oxford High School in 2021. A judge rejected pleas for a shorter sentence and ensured that Ethan Crumbley, 17, will not get an opportunity for parole.

Life sentences for teenagers are rare in Michigan since the U.S. Supreme Court and the state’s highest court said the violent acts of minors must be viewed differently than the crimes of adults. Judge Kwame Rowe’s decision followed anguished remarks by families of the deceased and survivors who spoke about how the tragedy has affected them.

“Your statements,” Rowe said, “do not fall on deaf ears.” Crumbley, who was 15 at the time of the shooting, pleaded guilty to 24 charges, including first-degree murder and terrorism.

A homeowner armed with a hammer recalls fighting back against an intruder who had broken into his Norwalk home on Thursday. The incident happened at a home on the 12300 block of Spry Street at around 1:45 a.m. As the victim and his wife were sound asleep, they were suddenly awoken by their barking dogs.

“When I saw him, it was probably one of the scariest things I had ever experienced,” said the victim, Kevin Perez. He looked around his home and didn’t see anything at first until he noticed something moving in his office. Suddenly, he saw an intruder standing in the dark.

Samuel Haskell IV, the Tarzana man accused of killing his wife and in-laws and then dismembering at least one of their bodies, made his first court appearance Friday, although his arraignment will take place next month.

Haskell, the son of a Hollywood executive whose name he shares, stood shirtless in court Friday morning where he was informed that he was going to continue to be held without bail. Originally expected to be an arraignment hearing in which the 35-year-old would be officially informed of his charges, his arraignment was instead postponed to Jan. 12, 2024.

As President Joe Biden landed in Los Angeles for a fundraiser benefitting his re-election bid, a group of pro-Palestinian protestors showed up outside the Holmby Hills event. "We want him to stop supporting the genocide in Gaza,” said Nashat Mshaiel, a protestor. “We do not wish to have our money sent to wars."

Around 1,000 demonstrators showed up as an increased number of LAPD officers were deployed to the area leading up to the president’s Friday night arrival.

President Joe Biden will kick off a weekend visit to the Southland Friday with a fundraiser to benefit his reelection bid. The president will spend the early afternoon hours in Las Vegas Friday before flying into Los Angeles International Airport around 4:40 p.m.

From there he will head over to Santa Monica, where he is expected to participate with First Lady Jill Biden and Rep. Nancy Pelosi in a campaign fundraiser at 7:30 p.m.

The reception will be attended by some of Hollywood’s biggest names, including directors Steven Spielberg and Rob Reiner, producers Shonda Rhimes and Peter Chernin and former studio chief Jim Gianopulos, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The event, which will include a performance by Lenny Kravitz, is being hosted by designer Michael Smith and former U.S. ambassador to Spain James Costos, according to Deadline.

The widow of a Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy is considering legal action after her husband died by suicide. Arturo Atilano-Valdez was one of four department employees to die by suicide in a 24-hour span in early November.

The deputy’s wife, Michele Atilano, said for years, her husband had complained about long hours at work and stressful jail conditions. She claims didn’t receive the support or help from his employers that could’ve saved his life. “My daughters cry every night when they go to sleep,” Michele said. “It's just me and my daughters left now.”
