A bill that would allow local governments across the State of California to license Amsterdam-style cannabis "coffee shops" has been passed in the State Assembly. The bill, AB 374, which was proposed by Assemblymember Matt Haney, D-San Francisco, passed with broad bipartisan support, receiving a 64 to 9 vote.

Hundreds of packages were scattered on and around the 210 Freeway in Monrovia after an Amazon semi-truck crashed into a side wall. Fifteen months ago, Dev Shah spent a miserable five hours spelling outdoors in chilly, windy, damp conditions at a supersize regional competition in Orlando, Florida, only to fall short of his dream of returning to the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

“Despondent is the right word,” Dev said. “I just didn’t know if I wanted to keep continuing.” Look at him now.

Soft-spoken but brimming with confidence, Dev asked precise questions about obscure Greek roots, rushed through his second-to-last word and rolled to the National Spelling Bee title Thursday night. Dev's winning word was “psammophile,” a layup for a speller of his caliber.

In a Friday evening address from the Oval Office, President Joe Biden addressed the debt ceiling deal he negotiated with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy that sailed through Congress with bipartisan support.

Biden celebrated a “crisis averted” in his first address since the deal’s passage, saying, “No one got everything they wanted, but the American people got what they needed.”

The deal will suspend the debt limit for two years, while also putting in new work requirements for older Americans receiving food assistance. It also boosts funding for veterans and defense and approves a natural gas pipeline going from West Virginia to Virginia.

California homeowners will no longer be in the “good hands” of Allstate.

Almost a week after State Farm, California’s largest property insurer, announced that the company would stop accepting insurance applications for all business and personal property in California, another company is making headlines for a similar decision.

Allstate told California’s Department of Insurance that it would stop selling new homeowner insurance to those in the Golden State last year, though the news didn’t seem to make waves until recently.

Police are searching for two armed robbers who held up a pair of taco stands early Friday morning. The first robbery took place around midnight near the intersection of East 103rd Street and Compton Avenue in the Watts neighborhood.

The workers said that two men approached the stand and demanded money. One of the suspects pulled out a handgun and pointed it at workers.

Police said at least five different taco stands have been robbed this week alone. They believe the robbers are part of a group of young Hispanic men in their teens and 20s specifically targeting taco vendors

The Icons for this year’s WeHo Pride Parade will be RuPaul’s Drag Race, Laith Ashley, Niecy Nash-Betts & Jessica Betts, and Melissa McCarthy. WeHo Pride will honor these trailblazers and allies as this year’s Icons for their work in bringing the LGBTQ community and social justice issues to the forefront, as well as expanding queer representation in mainstream pop culture.

At Saticoy Elementary School in North Hollywood, controversy over a scheduled Pride event came to a head Friday morning when parents on both sides of the issue squared off in dueling demonstrations that turned violent.

Supporters and opponents of a Pride month assembly gathered outside the school with city and school police stepping in to separate the sides. Officers were on the scene to "facilitate a peaceful and lawful exercise of constitutional rights," the Los Angeles Police Department said on Twitter.

Teachers are planning at least two protests after the Temecula Valley School Board in California voted to ban a new social studies curriculum over its inclusion of gay rights pioneer Harvey Milk.

The board president was heard during the meeting referring to Milk as a “pedophile.”
